Joint Kits
Several methods are available to insulate pipe joints. The insulation joint will depend on the type of outer jacket and core pipe, the method of pipe joining and whether for buried or above ground installation.
Welded Joints - buried
Insulation joint detail for welded steel , butt fused polyethylene, FRP/RTR bonded joints, etc., for buried applications.
Insulated pipe joints shall be completed with the use of pre-fabricated rigid polyisocyanurate urethane half shells and an adhesive lined wrap around heat shrink sleeve. The heat shrink sleeve shall overlap the insulation jacket by a minimum of 75 mm (3 in).
Bell x Spigot or Push On Joints - buried
Insulation joint detail for pre-insulated pipe with push on joints (including solvent weld PVC with couplings) for buried applications.
Half-shells are not required on pipe with push-on (bell x spigot) joints. The urethane foam is factory applied over the bell end while the insulation is stripped back to the insertion point on the spigot end. When the pipe is joined, the insulation faces meet one another and the resulting seam is sealed using a single turn of 150 mm (6 in) wide butyl rubber joint tape (or wrap around heat shrink sleeve). Field installed insulation half shells are NOT required.
For pipes which are heat traced, the seam shall be sealed using an adhesive lined wrap around heat shrink sleeve (or butyl rubber joint tape). The heat shrink sleeve shall overlap the insulation jacket by a minimum of 75 mm (3 in). The heat shrink sleeve shall be installed only after the THERMOCABLE® heating cable has been installed and tested.
Metal Spiwrap Outer Jacket Joints – above ground
Insulation joint detail for pre-insulated pipes with SPIWRAP® galvanized steel outer jacket, for above ground applications.
Insulated pipe joints shall be completed with the use of pre-fabricated rigid polyisocyanurate urethane half shells and a pre-rolled metal sheet of the same material and gauge as the SPIWRAP® outer jacket. The metal sheet shall overlap the insulation jacket by a minimum of 75 mm (3 in) and it shall be installed with the longitudinal seam in the 3 o’clock position to act as a drip edge and shall be secured with stainless steel band assemblies.
Welded Joints – above ground
Insulation joint detail for welded steel , butt fused polyethylene, FRP/RTR bonded joints, etc., for above ground applications using PE casing outer jacket.
Insulated pipe joints shall consist of pre-fabricated rigid polyisocyanurate or urethane foam half shells supplied complete with either:
Slipjoint® joint kit

3.17 – 6.35 mm (0.125 to 0.250 in) wall split casing, stainless steel bands and band-it clips. The Urecon Slipjoint® allows for expansion and contraction by having one end fixed while the other end is free to slide. Ideally suited to laid-on-grade pipe applications in the mining sector.

Urecon Mec-Seal® joint kit*

For more demanding or waterproof applications, a heat-shrinkable expanded cross linked polyethylene casing is available in lieu of the split casing.

Welded Joints for High Temperature Applications– above/below ground
Insulation joint detail for welded steel or RTR bonded joints used in piping operating between 94°C (200°F) and 150°C (300°F).
a) Hi-Temp - Insulated pipe joints (above ground)
Insulated pipe joints shall consist of prefabricated rigid polyisocyanurate foam half shells supplied complete with either:
- 3.17 – 6.35 mm (0.125 to 0.250 in) wall split casing, stainless steel bands and band-it clips. This Urecon Slipjoint® allows for expansion and contraction by having one end fixed while the other end is free to slide. (data sheet)
- 22 gauge black powder coated steel custom configured to suit the type of joint at hand. All metal overlaps at the joints shall be 50 mm (2 in) minimum, caulked with silicone and shall be field positioned in such a way as to shed water.
- Canusa-CPS WLON® heat shrink wrap complete with closure seal (data sheet)
- For more demanding or waterproof applications, a heat-shrinkable expanded cross linked polyethylene casing is available; this is the Urecon Mec-Seal® joint kit. Refer to the Mec-Seal® submittal data sheet for details. (data sheet)
b) Hi-Temp - Insulated pipe joints (buried)
Insulated pipe joints shall consist of field foamed in place Hi-Temp polyisocyanurate foam supplied complete with Canusa-CPS Superseal® heat shrink wrap with closure seal, as supplied by Urecon. The heat-shrink sleeves shall overlap the insulation jacket by a minimum of 75 mm (3 in) on either side of the joint. For more demanding or critical applications, a Urecon Mec-Seal® joint kit as described above in should be considered; refer to the Mec-Seal® submittal data sheet for details.
All joints requiring mechanically restrained fittings or flange assemblies – above/below ground
These joints are insulated by way of a prefabricated kit which is field applied. See Fittings section for more info.
